On Thursday, January 15th, over 70 West Ashley HS educators’ Professional Development day included an assignment to visit local businesses. This opportunity for educators to spend part of their PD day learning “off campus” was conceived by West Ashley HS principal Lee Runyon. Principal Runyon said, “the purpose of this activity was 2 fold:
  1. For our faculty to find rigorous, real-world application opportunities of content area skills that can be brought back into our classrooms.
  2. For educators and community partners to reflect on the SC Profile of the High School Graduate relative to our students’ development of World Class Skills ready for college, career and citizenship.

Thank you to all the organizations that hosted educators from West Ashley High School for this experience!

Charleston School of the Arts Students Complete Fall Internships

Mr. Bill Smyth gets to lead a very special class each semester at the Charleston County School of the Arts where students are connected with local business for internships.

His students are required to keep a weekly journal of their internship experiences, turn in time sheets detailing their hours worked, and have a supervisor review meeting at the end of the term. The students must also complete any specific assignments from their work site supervisor.

North Charleston HS Students Excel in Business Plan Contest

Thank you to Carolyn Southall from North Charleston HS for submitting this story about her students success in entrepreneurship!

Recently at North Charleston High School, students received awards for completing a business plan and three of them competed in an in-class business plan competition.

The sponsor for this event was the North Charleston Exchange Club. The winners were: 1st place:$250.00 Keenan White – Keenan presented his plan for a lawn care business. His business is currently in operation. , 2nd place:V$150.00 Angelica Reynolds – Angelica created a business plan for digitally enhanced photo books with animation, and 3rd place: $100.00 Jabari Jenkins – Jabari presented his plan for a sneaker restoration business.

13 students in my entrepreneurship class created a business plan. This is a big deal for my students. Many of them never heard of entrepreneurship back in August. Now, they have had the experience of learning skills that they can use now, and in the future. As a business teacher I am proud to share knowledge and learn with, and from my wonderful students.
