Over 2000 Students Attend 2nd Annual High School STEM Career Fair

2016 STEM Career Fair BannerNorth Charleston, SC – October 27, 2016 – Over 50 companies from throughout the Charleston region set up interactive exposition style booths for the 2nd annual High School STEM Career Fair hosted by the N. Charleston Convention Center.

Special thanks to all the sponsors that made this year’s event possible, especially the presenting sponsor Charleston Regional Business Journal.

Over 2000 students from schools in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties arrived from 8:30 to 1:30 for a chance to connect with the local companies they might find themselves working with, in the not too distant future, after graduation.

Each student received a bag when they entered the fair. Students also received a bottled water supplied by Kickin’ Chicken and a bag of chips supplied by Charleston Defense Contractors Association. Exhibitors’ and volunteers’ luncheons came from Kickin’ Chicken and delicious coffee was provided by Coastal Coffee Roasters.

MUSC Hosts Campus Visit and Career Fair for Lowcountry High School Students

Charleston, SC – March 4, 2016 – Hundreds of students from throughout the Charleston region were invited to visit the Medical University of South Carolina for an event called “Discover MUSC – from Classroom to Career”.

???????????????????????????????

The students were treated to an opening informational session, a large career fair with interactive exhibits and professionals from well known and lesser known components of MUSC’s “city within a city.”

“My students loved the hands-on opportunities to see things like a real human brain and spinal cord, and my students also enjoyed learning about the diverse range of non-medical professions MUSC needs to serve our community,” said Lucia Watson, Health Science Instructor a Garrett Academy of Technology.

After the career fair held in the MUSC Wellness Center gym, the students were split into small groups with an MUSC student guide and treated to a campus tour followed by a lunch and learn session with leading physicians. One presentation was on modern dentistry and the amazing tools and software used at MUSC to create same day crowns and veneers. Another presentation was on the fast growing field of tele-medicine, providing healthcare remotely in real-time.

To conclude the terrific day of experiential learning, students participated in a wrap-up session and had the chance to win prize packages full of MUSC swag.

The day was truly an ideal experience for students considering a profession in health care and the many other supporting career pathways at MUSC.

Thanks to the many generous professionals at MUSC for investing their time in local students, and thanks to the Metro Chamber of Commerce Regional Health Advisory Board for Career Academies for their important role in facilitating the event.

Local professionals from several engineering firms, all members of the West Ashley High School STEM Advisory Board, recently led Dr. Barbara Leonard’s students on a special tour of the Ravenel Bridge of the Cooper River. Tyler talking to Steven

“The Ravenel Bridge Walk, led by engineers who specialize in building and inspecting the bridge, was the highlight of Engineers Week,” said Dr. Leonard.Group on the bridge

“Seeing the bridge through the eyes of these knowledgeable engineers was an opportunity for the PLTW Civil Engineering and Architecture students to experience firsthand the connection of their lessons at school to a world-class project of incredible magnitude,” Dr. Leonard added.

Baptist Hill Middle High School Partnering with Susan G. Komen Lowcountry for Presentation Skills Mentoring

Lisa Jones and Lucy Spears, Susan G. Komen Lowcountry, delivered formal and informal presentation skills to Kylene Gerideau-Grant’s classes at Baptist Hill Middle High School, as well as provided some one on one coaching.

Students will prepare a team project on a topic related to breast cancer awareness. This partnership is an excellent example of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Career Academy program, and has been a wonderful enhancement to the learning that takes place in CTE business classrooms at BHMHS.
