Burke High School Senior Wins Top Award in Logo Creation Contest

The following CTE Success Story was provided by Mr. Micah Brown, Burke High School Digital Art & Design CTE Teacher:
Congratulations to Mateo Scott, 18 year old senior at Burke High School for creating an award winning graphic in a local logo design contest for NFP’s “In Good Health Expo 2017.”
NFP, an insurance broker and consulting firm based out of New York, chose Scott’s design from 20 other participant entries to use for their conference branding.
Mateo Scott has been in the Digital Arts and Design program at Burke for two semesters. When NFP needed a logo for the expo, they decided it would be a good opportunity for the Digital Art students. A Career and Technology Academy Partner of Burke High School, NFP knew from working with Burke that our DAD students had talent, so they included them in the contest. The theme of the logo contest was wellness. “Mateo designed his logo in just two class periods,” said Mr. Micah Brown, Digital Art & Design instructor.Burke logo contest winner

700+ Students and Parents Attend Youth Apprenticeships Information Night

Thanks to all the students and parents that attended the information session on our region’s Youth Apprenticeship opportunities on February 2 at Trident Technical College. Attendees got to hear about youth apprenticeships available in 15 career pathways from over 100 local companies!

Over 100 employers in the Charleston region are offering rising high school juniors, seniors, and graduating seniors the opportunity to Get Paid to Learn as youth apprentices.

Youth apprentices will receive paid on-the-job training along with classroom instruction as dual-credit students through TTC’s Workforce Academies.

Thanks to the support of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, students in the youth apprenticeship program receive a scholarship worth approximately $6000 to cover all tuition and costs for apprenticeship-related college courses at TTC.

Apprenticeship opportunities are available in the following local careers:

  •      Industrial Mechanics
  •      Machine Tool Technology
  •      Culinary Arts
  •      Hotel Operations
  •      EMT (open only to rising and graduating seniors)
  •      CNA/Pre-Nursing
  •      Medical Office Assistant
  •      Computer Networking
  •      Junior Computer Programming
  •      Cyber-security
  •      Civil CAD Technician
  •      Automotive Mechanic
  •      Air Conditioning and Refrigeration/HVAC
  •      Bookkeeping/Pre-Accounting
  •      Security/Pre-Law Enforcement *

* In South Carolina, law enforcement officers must be at least 21 years of age. This apprenticeship equips students for employment as private security officers, and prepares them to continue their education and training at the police academy.

Students who participate in and complete the two-year program will receive:

  •      Two years of paid employment and mentoring from an industry professional
  •      A high school diploma (if not already granted)
  •      One year of college credit from TTC free of charge
  •      A completion certificate for coursework that may be applied to an associate degree
  •      National credentials from the U.S. Department of Labor
  •      Two years of work experience
  •      Marketable skills for life

Youth Apprenticeship Participation Requirements

  •      To be eligible for a youth apprenticeship, a student must:
  •      Be a rising junior, senior or graduating senior
  •      Be at least 16 years of age
  •      Achieve qualifying ACCUPLACER Placement Test scores*
  •      Demonstrate academic readiness and responsibility
  •      Have reliable transportation to work and to school
  •      Be legally able to work in the U.S.

7 CCSD Students Start Spring Internships with Boeing South Carolina

Seven seniors from schools throughout Charleston County School District recently began spring semester internship with Boeing South Carolina.

The students will be working 20 hours per week after school. They will earn a high school course credit as well as a paycheck, but the most significant reward will be the relationships they will gain with professionals from a global manufacturing company and the authentic work experience.

Congratulations to these seven students on their work-based learning placement, and thanks to the team at Boeing SC and Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce for all their hard work facilitating the program.

6 Baptist Hill High School Students Begin Spring Internships with Stevens Towing

They will be working at the industrial marine yard this semester and gaining valuable experience in welding, rigging and mechanical repair.
