Over 2000 Students Attend 2nd Annual High School STEM Career Fair

2016 STEM Career Fair BannerNorth Charleston, SC – October 27, 2016 – Over 50 companies from throughout the Charleston region set up interactive exposition style booths for the 2nd annual High School STEM Career Fair hosted by the N. Charleston Convention Center.

Special thanks to all the sponsors that made this year’s event possible, especially the presenting sponsor Charleston Regional Business Journal.

Over 2000 students from schools in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties arrived from 8:30 to 1:30 for a chance to connect with the local companies they might find themselves working with, in the not too distant future, after graduation.

Each student received a bag when they entered the fair. Students also received a bottled water supplied by Kickin’ Chicken and a bag of chips supplied by Charleston Defense Contractors Association. Exhibitors’ and volunteers’ luncheons came from Kickin’ Chicken and delicious coffee was provided by Coastal Coffee Roasters.

West Ashley HS Educators Spend Professional Development Day with Area Businesses

On Thursday, January 15th, over 70 West Ashley HS educators’ Professional Development day included an assignment to visit local businesses. These morning “externship” opportunities were assigned by department, for example teachers from the science department visited High Purity Standards, a local science laboratory that manufactures basic elements for various applications.

This opportunity for educators to spend part of their PD day learning “off campus” was conceived by West Ashley HS principal Lee Runyon. Principal Runyon said, “the purpose of this activity was 2 fold:
  1. For our faculty to find rigorous, real-world application opportunities of content area skills that can be brought back into our classrooms.
  2. For educators and community partners to reflect on the SC Profile of the High School Graduate relative to our students’ development of World Class Skills ready for college, career and citizenship.

Thank you to all the organizations that hosted educators from West Ashley High School for this experience!
