Students got to speak directly with professionals from companies keen on doing their part to develop the next generation of high skilled talent for the growing economy in the Charleston region.

Thank you to West Ashley Robotics for providing the wonderful video above!

Hands on activities sparked conversations, and many students began professional relationships that could lead to a paid youth apprenticeship while still in high school!20171012_101134

IMG_3714Mr. Tremayne Smith, an educator from Daniel Jenkins Academy said, “The Career Fair was a great opportunity for our students at Daniel Jenkins to experience the various career options in the workforce. The exposure also generated interest in areas that our students may have never experienced or even considered. It is rewarding to see their interaction with the employees of the various companies and the way they handled the conversation.”

Venture Aerobearings Hosts Engineering Students from C E Williams Middle School for Work-based Learning Experience

20161102_124045_palmetto_commerce_parkwayThank you to the Venture Aerobearings team for hosting 40+ 7th graders from Mr. John Shell’s pre-engineering program at C E Williams Middle School in West Ashley for a site visit to their lean & clean manufacturing facility.

This work-based learning experience was divided into two days to serve over 40 students –
One group visited on Nov. 2 and another visited on Nov. 3.

Opportunities provided by Venture Aerobearings associates during the students’ visit included:

  • Learning about employment opportunities with the company
  • Understanding how the manufacturing process works
  • Exposing students to state of the art machines used to create
  • Relating classroom experiences with real world job experiences by using CAD Design to create usable working 3-D models
  • Competing with classmates in a team building exercise using STEM skills as well as 21st Century Skills to create a bridge model

Students got to meet with several  industrial technicians and engineers to discuss the pathways to a career in manufacturing. They also got an extensive tour of the manufacturing floor.

“My students were completely engaged the entire time; we will reference this experience many many times in our classroom”, said Mr. Shell about the visit.

West Ashley HS Educators Spend Professional Development Day with Area Businesses

On Thursday, January 15th, over 70 West Ashley HS educators’ Professional Development day included an assignment to visit local businesses. These morning “externship” opportunities were assigned by department, for example teachers from the science department visited High Purity Standards, a local science laboratory that manufactures basic elements for various applications.

This opportunity for educators to spend part of their PD day learning “off campus” was conceived by West Ashley HS principal Lee Runyon. Principal Runyon said, “the purpose of this activity was 2 fold:
  1. For our faculty to find rigorous, real-world application opportunities of content area skills that can be brought back into our classrooms.
  2. For educators and community partners to reflect on the SC Profile of the High School Graduate relative to our students’ development of World Class Skills ready for college, career and citizenship.

Thank you to all the organizations that hosted educators from West Ashley High School for this experience!
