MMA Culinary Arts Students Earn 1st Place in Food Collection Drive

Students in the culinary arts  program at Military Magnet Academy recently earned 1st place for the 2nd year in a row in the small school division of the 2014 Student Can Food Drive led by the Lowcountry Food Bank!

This year, students collected and donated 3,184 pounds of food.  Students and teachers in several CCSD elementary schools helped Military Magnet Academy with this project, including Pinehurst ES, Pepperhill ES, Lambs ES, Burns ES, Hunley Park ES and Mary Food ES who each collected hundreds of cans in the joint community service project. In all, 87 boxes were collected, and the students built a “great wall for hunger” (picture below) in the MMA culinary arts lab.

To kick off the collection we had a can food pep rally and brought in 400 cans.  They also stood out side a Food Lion for 4 hours and the customers filled a buggy.

Check out this story for more details on their Shopping Spree sponsored by Food Lion that was part of this overall challenge.

Joseph Crompton, culinary arts instructor at MMA, sends his thanks to all that helped make this project successful – especially the donors, students, and Coach Ross who helped collect the donations at the 6 participating elementary schools.
