Burke Scholars Explore Neuroscience Careers
On Wednesday, November 12th our Burke High School scholars had an incredible opportunity to visit the MUSC Department of Neuroscience to explore various careers in science and healthcare. Throughout the day, they learned about the educational pathways required to work in this field and gained insight into the importance of research, including the work being done through the Youth Collaboration initiative.
The experience included:
- A tour of the MUSC Simulation Center, where students listened to heartbeats on a manikin and observed CPR demonstrations using chest compressions and a defibrillator.
- A visit to the Biomedical Imaging Department to see how MRIs are used to study the brain.
- An engaging lab session where only two brave students handled frogs while learning how they are used in research.
- A virtual reality activity showing the effects of alcohol on the brain.
Lunch was provided by Jersey Mike’s, and we are proud to share that our students were attentive, excited and fully engaged throughout the day.
This field trip offered an inspiring glimpse into the world of neuroscience and the many opportunities available in science and healthcare careers.
