March 26, 2015 – Businesses from around the Lowcounty are offering 11th- and 12th-grade students unprecedented opportunities to learn while they earn. With the collaboration of economic and educational leaders in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties, Trident Technical College (TTC) has established a Youth Apprenticeship Program aimed at training and educating the next generation of highly-skilled workers across a broad spectrum of industries.

SAVE THE DATE – June 9, 2015 is Youth Apprenticeships Signing Day!

From culinary and hospitality to manufacturing and information technology, approximately 40 area companies from these sectors have joined forces with TTC and the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce to offer positions to high school students in four local school districts.

TTC and Apprenticeship Carolina, a division of the S.C. Technical College System, facilitated the creation of this collaborative approach to career readiness and workforce development. The programs begin in August, and students are encouraged to apply now for an apprenticeship in their preferred field. Those selected for a position will gain invaluable skills and experience under the individualized guidance of an industry mentor.

Apprenticeships are open to any qualifying high school junior or senior interested in computer programming, computer networking, culinary arts, fiberglass finishing, hotel operations and industrial mechanics or machining. Apprentices receive paid on-the-job training through part-time employment with participating companies while attending high school and taking college-level industry-related courses at TTC as dual-credit students. All tuition and costs associated with the relevant TTC courses are paid for by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce.

Students who successfully complete the two-year program will receive a high school diploma, a certificate from TTC that can be applied toward an associate’s degree and a journeyman credential from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Partners from the culinary and hospitality industries include Charleston Cooks, Halls Chophouse, High Cotton, Post House, Rita’s Seaside Grill, Slightly North of Broad, The Vendue, Tides at Folly, Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Wild Dunes, Courtyard Charleston Mt. Pleasant, Fulton Lane Inn, Hyatt Place Charleston Airport/Convention Center, King Charles Inn, Kings Courtyard Inn, Rutledge House, The Mills House Wyndam Grand Hotel and Wentworth Mansion.
