Charleston County Department of Public Safety Student Leadership & Intern Program

This summer 22 CCSD students participated in the Charleston County Department of Public Safety Student Leadership & Intern Program. 14 of these students were 1st year interns and 8 student were returning interns that graduated high school and returned to the program for their second summer. The Public Safety Student leadership program gives our students an in depth hand on learning experience where they are exposed to Charleston County’s Public Safety Department, 911 Center, and the EMT Academy. CCSD is extremely proud of these young scholars and thankful for our partnership with Charleston County Public Safety!

1st Year Interns, rising seniors- Had the opportunity this summer to gain exposure to the different agencies and elements in our public safety department. They got hands-on training with Awendaw-McClellanville Fire Department, Charleston County Rescue Squad, Charleston County Emergency Department, Charleston County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Charleston County Emergency Communications Center (911). They also got the chance to tour these facilities to see how it all works together. The interns also gained certification in CPR and the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch Emergency Telecommunications Course, entry level certifications that meet minimum standards of training in several organizations. In addition to this training, they also gained some knowledge in professional development including financial responsibility, how to apply for jobs, mock interviews and interview feedback, and mental health. As if that wasn’t enough, they also had the opportunity to give back to their community through service with Habitat for Humanity and Low Country Food Bank, and donations to Charleston Animal Society, Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, and area Back to School initiatives.
