Burke High School Partners with Junior Achievement

Burke High School Partners with Junior Achievement

Burke High School students had the amazing opportunity to partner with Junior Achievement for two different events.

The first event was a career panel where three distinguished professionals: Mary Joseph from State Farm Insurance, Brian Michel from ServisFirst Bank, and Kadedra Kiner, the Global Clinical Marketing Director at Zimmer Biomet. They shared their career journey and the motivations behind their career choices. The event captivated the students, fostering engagement and sparking their interest in various career paths.

We are thankful for their willingness to share their professional experiences with our scholars!

The second event: a group of Burke High School AVID upper-classman as well as 62 AVID 9th graders participated in Junior Achievement’s Finance Park Mobile event. This was hosted at R.B. Stall High School and the program equipped students with essential skills to make informed financial decisions about income, expenses, savings, and credit.

Concepts Learned:

1.     Personal Financial Planning: Students learn to make informed financial decisions that will impact their future.

2.     Budgeting: They create and manage a personal budget based on hypothetical life scenarios. .

3.     Career Exploration: Students explore different career paths and understand the relationship between education, career choices, and earning potential.

4.     Saving and Investing: The program teaches the benefits and risks associated with saving and investing, helping students plan for long-term financial goals.

5.     Credit and Debt Management: Students learn about the advantages and disadvantages of using credit and how to manage debt responsibly.

6.     Taxes and Insurance: They gain an understanding of taxes, their purpose, and how they affect personal finances. .Financial Decision-Making: Through interactive simulations, students make financial decisions                 across various life stages, such as marriage, children, and homeownership.

Huge thank you to Ms. Trapp, Ms. Godfrey-Jackson and Ms. Tisdale for coordinating this event.

Thank you Junior Achievement!
