Military Magnet Host EveryDay STEM Career Exploration Camp
The Military Magnet Academy’s EveryDay STEM Career Exploration Camp kicked off with a dynamic and engaging week focused on sparking curiosity and fostering teamwork among our young scientists and engineers. Each day was packed with hands-on activities, soft skills development, and collaborative projects that brought the world of STEM to life for students.
Day 1: Science and Soft Skills The week started with a bang as students dove into the world of science through a soap-making activity led by Ms. Faucett, MMA’s dedicated middle school science teacher. The hands-on experience made learning fun and interactive. Afterward, Ms. Archie guided students through a session on being proactive, equipping them with essential soft skills for success. The day ended with a collaborative robotics workshop, where students began building and programming robots, setting the stage for an exciting week ahead.
Day 2: Engineering and Ambiguity The second day featured an exhilarating balloon tower challenge that tested students’ creativity, engineering skills, and ability to navigate ambiguity. Team “The Turbos” excelled, building the tallest tower and demonstrating remarkable teamwork. The day also included a session on the science of garden soil and the water cycle, led by high school science teacher Ms. Waddell, and an introduction to block programming with LEGO SPIKE and EV3 robots.
Day 3: Culinary Science and Growth Mindset Day three brought a unique blend of STEM and culinary arts with a lesson in measuring and calculating ingredients for chocolate chip cookies, thanks to Chef Kim and Camp Tasty Success. The soft skills focus was on developing a growth mindset, prioritizing tasks, and embracing flexibility. Students continued progressing in their robotics projects, showcasing their problem-solving abilities and creativity.
Day 4: Structural Engineering and Virtual Field Trip The excitement continued on day four with a marshmallow tower challenge, promoting collaboration and design thinking. Students then embarked on a virtual field trip to the Truist Innovation & Technology Center, where Mr. Cort Asante highlighted the importance of soft skills in the workplace. The day ended with students finalizing their robot programming in preparation for the camp’s final challenge.
Day 5: STEM Escape Room and Final Presentations The camp concluded with a thrilling STEM Escape Room challenge, where students applied their math, technology, and problem-solving skills to overcome a series of puzzles. The week wrapped up with an inspiring presentation from LanXess, our camp sponsor, on air pollution control technology in our community, followed by the final soft skills session led by Ms. Archie. The camp was a resounding success, with students leaving equipped with new knowledge, skills, and a passion for STEM.
Special recognition goes to the Shining STEM Stars of the week: Jacob, Camile, OJ, Shavonna, and Zekhi, whose enthusiasm, teamwork, and leadership shone brightly throughout the camp.
A special shout out to Mrs. Sally-Ann Archie for ALWAYS supporting the mission and a huge Shout out to Ms. Faucette (MMA Science), Ms. Waddell (MMA Science), Ms. Ebony Johnson, Chef Kim, and TSgt. White for supporting the camp.
Thanks to the MMA parents for their support and to the educators and sponsors for making this week possible. Remember: Every day is STEM!
