Elks Club Organizes Municipal Career Exploration Event and Luncheon for Garrett, St. Johns, and Baptist Hill High School Students
Thank you to the members of the Elks Lodge 242 of Charleston for organizing a very special career exploration event with local municipalities for students from Garrett Academy, St. Johns High School and Baptist Hill High School on March 5, 2020.
Students from Garrett Academy got to spend time at North Charleston City Hall. They were welcomed by Mayor Keith Summey and other staff members, and then were connected with various professionals with city departments to shadow. Other students from Garrett Academy got to meet with Judge Irv Condon in the Charleston County Courthouse and visit other key service providers in the Charleston County offices downtown.
Students from St. Johns High School got to visit the Charleston City Hall and meet Mayor Tecklenburg in the historic City Counsel Chambers. Each student was connected with a professional from a city department aligned with their career interest.
And lastly, students from Baptist Hill MHS visited the Charleston County Public Services Building in North Charleston to learn about the many ways the county supports citizens.
After a terrific morning of career exploration hosted by Charleston County, the City of North Charleston, and the City of Charleston, the students were transported to the Elks Lodge for a special luncheon served by Elks volunteers. Students and their job shadowing hosts shared stories about their experiences and everyone enjoyed the buffet lunch.
Special thanks to Nanette Piccirillo and Jennie Sirisky for their help planning this amazing work-based learning experience for 80+ students and educators from 3 CCSD high schools!
