North Charleston HS Inaugural Hospitality and Tourism CTE Summer Camp
Shared by: Mr. Kane Pappas
This summer North Charleston High School hosted its first Hospitality and Tourism CTE Summer Camp.
Students attended daily field trips where they learned about event operations, community programs, hotel operations, tourism, and careers. We visited the Park Circle Community Building and Playground, The North Charleston Marriott, The Cooper, and Sewee Visitors and Environmental Education Center. Thank you all for your support of this program and a special thank you to Ms. Southall for co-chaperoning the field trips. We had a wonderful time each day! Below are a few highlights.
Park Circle Community Building and Playground
- City of North Charleston Cultural Arts manages the event space and learned about workshops and classes that are held at the Community Building
- Students explored the archives and were fascinated to see copies of old North Charleston High School yearbooks
- The Park Circle Playground is the world’s largest inclusive playground
North Charleston Marriott
- Toured the property and learned about hotel operations and career opportunities.
- Due to its close proximity to the airport, there are elements of aviation throughout the hotel. The table in the Velocity Conference Room is made from an airplane wing
- During lunch with the managers, students delivered their elevator pitches that we practiced in class during the school year
Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center
- Students learned about local ecosystems, wildlife, and conservation efforts
- Scavenger hunt identifying local wildlife while walking the one mile nature trail
The Cooper and Waterfront Park
- North Charleston High School alumni greeting who immediately made the students feel special
- Personalized tour of the property
- Tour of restaurant, spa, pool, guest room, event space, and lobby
- Visit to the iconic Pineapple Fountain which represents the symbol of hospitality
